By Azian Othman

Bandar Seri Begawan - Based on a report from drug control authorities in a neighbouring country, some traditional medicines were found to be adulterated, according to Brunei's Ministry of Health.

XP Tongkat All Supreme Capsule manufactured by Shenzen Qidentang Health Food Co Ltd is adulterated with Tadalafil.

Phyto Shape or Phyto Hapem manufactured by Malaysia's Extumax Corp Sdn Bhd was found to be adulterated with Sibutramine.

Etumax Eurycoma Activ Plus, manufactured by Malaysia's Etumax Corp Sdn Bhd, was found to contain Sildenafil.

The adulterants detected in these traditional medicines are potent prescription/medicinal substances used in the treatment of male erectile dysfunction, which should only be used under

proper medical supervision, it was stated.

Some adverse effects that could occur from the unsupervised consumption of Tadalafil may include serious heart attack, stroke and severe hypotension; particularly in susceptible individuals with heart conditions and/or who are taking nitrate drugs.

Uncontrolled consumption of Tadalafil without proper medical supervision is dangerous.

Unsupervised consumption of Sibutramine may cause high blood pressure, heart palpitation and insomnia and in severe cases renal and hepatic impairments.

Sildenafil may cause serious heart attack and severe hypotension, particularly in susceptible individuals with heart conditions and/or who are taking nitrate drugs.

Uncontrolled consumption of both products without proper medical supervision is dangerous.

No approval has ever been given by the Ministry of Health for the importation and sale of these products.

Following this report, the products are not allowed to be imported and sold in the country.

Consumers who have been taking the affected products are advised to stop taking it immediately, and to discard them or surrender to the Pharmacy Enforcement Section, Block 2G, 8th Floor, BSB HC in Jalan Ong Sum Ping, Bandar Seri Begawan.

If they experience any adverse reactions or feel unwell, they should consult doctors immediately.

The public involved in the retailing of the products are reminded that it is an offence under the Poison Act 1956 to sell any product containing any substance controlled under the Poisons Act. The penalty, upon conviction, is a fine of $8,000 or imprisonment of six months.
