Talk To Raise Awareness On Cervical Cancer
By Aziz Idris and Edwin Eng

Bandar Seri Begawan - In Conjunction with the 'Prevention is Better Than Cure Campaign', the Jerudong Park Medical Centre Sdn Bhd (JPMC) held a health talk at DST headquarters, yesterday.

Some 50 employees from DST Group attended the event, which was presented by Dr Chitra,Karat, JPMC's Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist who touched on the topic of cervical cancer and prevention.

She also informed the participants about the causes of cervical cancer and measures needed to prevent this disease.

According to Dr Chitra, a regular pap smear test can help detect potentially cancerous changes, which are usually caused by sexually transmitted Human Papilom viruses (HPV). The test remains an effective, widely used method for early detection of pre-cancer and cervical cancer.

"HPV Vaccination is now available to help prevent cervical cancer, pre-cancerous genital lesions caused due to HPV," she said while recommending that the vaccine be administered to females between ages nine and 45.

At the end of the talk, a question and answer session was also held.

Mr Sures Muniandy, JPMC's Marketing and Communication officer then delivered a brief insight on the upcoming promotion in conjunction with Mother's Day celebration. JPMC will be offering a special package available for the whole month of May.

Special prices will also be offered for blood tests for cancer markers screening, pap smear and cervical cancer vaccination.

During an interview with the Bulletin regarding the aims of the talk, Mr Sures said that it was to raise awareness for members of DST Group as well as the public on cervical cancer and ways to prevent it.

This second series of health talks held by JPMC at DST Headquarters was made possible by Hjh Noor Aisha Hj Othman, the Human Resource Manager of DST Group.
