Mini Seafood Carnival Attracts Huge Crowd
By Achong Tanjong

Bandar Seri Begawan - Armed with huge plastic containers and bags, large crowds of people flocked to the Fish Landing Complex in Serasa, Muara, to purchase the fresh catch sold directly from the fishing ship at the Mini Seafood Carnival yesterday.

The three-day carnival sells fresh catch, which includes wide variety of fish and prawns at lower and affordable prices compared to those sold at other fish market.

According to Haji Zaini bin Haji Zain, the owner of fishing ship (AZAM-I), they caught more than 10 tonnes of fish yesterday. It was the largest catch so far, he said, adding t1 _at his other fishing boat, which is still operating at sea at Zone 3, will arrive today to bring in more fresh catch.

The catch comprised a local fish known as 'Aur-aur', sold at $10 per tray. The fish is popular for "Tahai" (smoke fish).

Others included 'Rumahan' at $2 per kilo, 'Tulai' at $1.50 per kilo and 'Ikan Bukulan'. All of them were fresh from the sea, he added.

Meanwhile, there are also stalls set up by other companies selling locally breed prawn Rosteris, which is sold for $6 to $8 per kilo depending on their sizes. Also selling their catch produce is Syt Bunga Semarbak who operates at Zone 2. Customers at the carnival urged the organiser to hold more similar activities, maybe once every two months.

"This is an opportunity that could attract Bruneians to stay at home and not crossing the borders during weekend and public holidays," they said.

They also gave a thumb up to the organiser (Fisheries Department) and participating companies for holding the carnival to sell their catch produce at reasonable prices.

The carnival, which ends this Sunday, is part of the organiser's efforts to help and support local entrepreneurs to boost their market sale. It is open to the public from Sam to 5.30pm. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
