Save Energy Pay Bills Urge Imams
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Being in debt is like having one’s soul hang in
balance without moving on, after death.
Such is a seriousness of the
unfinished business of accumulating unpaid utility bills, the Imams
said yesterday.
This message was highlighted by the
Imams yesterday in Friday sermon-advising people of Brunei to
embrace the culture of saving, without wasting.
Being part of a nation blessed with
peace and security with revenue coming from the natural resources
oil and gas, the people of Brunei could be thankful of their
blessings and intensify their faith in Allah.
"In enjoying oil and gas wealth, we
should not become wasteful but spend prudently and make saving one's
daily norm. Islam emphasises the habit of saving as it is the factor
that leads to one's harmony and prosperity and emphasises that one
should discipline oneself to nurture the habit of prudent spending
and in the use of subsidies like petrol, electrisity and gas.
Islam cautions against wastage as
an act of evil. "We must be aware that wastage burdens us
economically in terms of family expenditure and unpaid dues to
accumulate. Dues that are yet to be paid must be settled even though
the individual has passed away," the religious leaders said.
"This creates difficulties to heirs
like one's children in the future. The issue of debt has been
repeatedly highlighted in Friday sermons. Being in debt means the
soul of an individual hanging in limbo stopping one from entering a
higher plane till one's dues are settled. The habit of wastage
should be avoided," the Imams said.
"As we are all aware, the nation
held an Energy Week to remind and to give understanding to the
public on the government's continuous efforts to encourage us to
practise saving when one utilises the given resources."
The theme Energy Week called on
people to save energy with full commitment so that any undesirable
attitude would not prolong and become a culture.
One's part in all this is to answer
the call made by the Government. Hence, let us nurture and inculcate
the culture of saving. The present generation should begin setting a
good example to the future generations for the prosperity of the
nation.-- Courtesy of Borneo
