73 Immigration Offenders Deported

Begawan - The latest figures from the Immigration Law
Enforcement show that in this month, there have been 73 deportations
and two canings of immigration offenders. The Law Enforcement Unit has also
collected so far this month $22,300 in compounds (fines) from
workers and employers who broke immigration laws.
From the statistics given by the
unit, from May 6-19, 2008 there were 75 investigations, six charged,
two received canning and 44 people were compounded (fined).
Meanwhile, Immigration Law
Enforcers continued their efforts to uphold immigration laws on
Wednesday with a raid on two construction sites in the Brunei-Muara
District. Sixteen personnel from the
Immigration Law Enforcement Unit took part in the operation.
Two alleged immigration offenders
were caught in the raid - Sathik Ali Musthaffa for allegedly
engaging in employment while on a visit pass, and a grass-cutter
Manikam Selvarasu for allegedly taking a job not stipulated in his
work quota.
The unit reminded employers that it
is an offence to hire such immigration offenders.
They could be imprisonment for not
more than two years or fined not less than $3,000 but not more than
$6,000 or both. Committing a second offence could land them in
prison for not more than four years, a fine of not less than $6,000
