- To support the Ministry of Health's commitment in creating
a 100 per cent smoke-free environment, a ceremony was held to
distribute 12 types of Tobacco Act 2005 posters and No Smoking
notices to 48 government departments and 38 government and private
schools in the Belait District yesterday morning.
Present as the guest of honour to
distribute the posters and notices was Dato Paduka Awang Serbini bin
Haji Ali, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health.
The ceremony was held at the Suri
Seri Begawan Hospital in Kuala Belait in the presence of the Deputy
Permanent Secretary, Directors, senior government officials and
school principals.
The Acting Senior Medical Officer
Dr Maung Myint Lin in his speech said that Brunei Darussalam is
fully committed to the World Health Organisation (WHO) goal of a 100
per cent smoke-free environment to protect the public's health as
there is definite evidence that second hand smoke is harmful to
non-smokers.
In the national effort, Ministry of
Health has been actively promoting the No Smoking campaign since
1988 and declared that all buildings under the ministry including
offices, hospitals and clinics are No-Smoking Zones since August 15,
1990.
At the district level, Health
Department of Kuala Belait has been actively distributing No Smoking
messages to the public through the No Smoking Clinic and various
exhibitions in Kuala Belait, Dr Maung added.
The No Smoking clinic was opened to
the public in June 2006 and is situated at the Seria Health Clinic
with the aim of providing regular counsels and dispensing of
Nicotine Replacement Patches. Regular follow-ups have been arranged
for the clients on appointment basis.
