Ministry Of Health Opens Stop-Smoking Clinic

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Ministry of Health has begun a "Stop Smoking Clinic Service" to assist smokers to wipe out the unhealthy habit. Heads of departments and managers are on hand to assist officers and staff who wish to stop smoking by referring to the clinic.

This was highlighted by Dr Hj Affendy, guest of honour and Director-General of Medical Services of the Ministry of Health, at the distribution of Tobacco Act 2005 posters and `No Smoking' notices to government departments and schools in Temburong yesterday.

"Such service is provided by experts in the field to stop smoking," he said, and further added, "The Tobacco Act 2005 and its regulations will be enforced effective June 1, in line with His Majesty's titah who stressed the need to review the acts and regulations against cigarette smoking in this country."

Tobacco Act is in line with the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines where the main objective of such Order is to protect public health from tobacco through smoke-free environment.

The Tobacco Order highlights the control of selling and packaging of tobacco products, importer, supplier and vendor license, prohibits advertisements and promotion relating to smoking, control the use of tobacco products especially to those aged 18 and below, prohibit smoking at certain places and specified vehicles and the warning label on cigarette packs.

The posters have been printed and contain crucial information on the Order. It is hoped that such poster can be pasted at strategic places and working areas to ensure officers, staff and visitors are aware of the Order.

Heads of departments and managers of private premises are urged to put up the notices to spread the message that smoking is prohibited by law, to achieve a free-smoking environment, which the cooperation from all parties is needed.

Dr Hj Affendy hoped that such efforts made will help to produce a productive and prosperous society.

Meanwhile, according to Dr Win Naing, Medical Officer of Health in Temburong, Temburong has been actively disseminating antismoking messages to the public through exhibitions and important events such as Public Service Day and Mukim Sehat activities.
