More Asean Aid To Myanmar

Begawan - Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna, the Acting
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, yesterday joined the Foreign
Ministers of Asean and Representatives of the Member States of the
United Nations at the Asean-UN International Pledging Conference in
Yangon, Myanmar.
The conference was inaugurated by
Prime Minister Theirs Sein of the Union of Myanmar. The Secretary
General of Asean and the Undersecretary-General of UN Office for the
Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs briefed the conference on joint
Asean-UN efforts on international response to Cyclone Nargis.
During the conference, participants
discussed relief and rehabilitation initiatives and announced their
respective pledges of assistance to Myanmar. A Co-chairmen statement
on behalf of Ministers and Representatives attending the Pledging
Conference was issued at the end of
the session.

Prime Minister General Theirs Sein, Asean Secretary-General Surin
Pitsuwan, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Chinese Foreign
Minister Yang Jiechi and Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo
delivered speeches at the conference also attended by delegates from
52 UN and Asean member states as well as those from 24 UN agencies,
international financial institutions and non-governmental
organisations totaling over 360.
The Pledging Conference came after
Surin and Ban visited Myanmar during this week. Ban's two-day tour
on Thursday and Friday had taken him to two cyclone-devastated areas
in the Ayeyawaddy delta. Ban called on the international community
to extend more humanitarian assistance to Myanmar. -- Courtesy of Borneo
