Asean Meeting On Reducing Technical Barriers To Trade
By P Marilyn

Bandar Seri Begawan - The 5th ACCSQ Joint Sectoral Committee (JSC) on Electrical and Electronic Equipments (EEE) Meeting began yesterday and attended by Asean representatives.

The JSC EEE discussed the facilitation of the EEE trade in and beyond Asean in line with its mandate to address trade restrictive measures in the EEE sector in Asean, said a press release.

The meeting is hosted by the Ministry of Development (CPRU) and chaired by Dr Dennis Wong, Senior Executive Engineer from the Department of Technical Services, Public Works Department.

Brunei Darussalam is represented by the Ministry of Development (CPRU), Department of Technical Services (Public Works Department) and the Department of Electrical Services under the Office of the Minister of Energy.

With the Asean Vision 2020 to establish a single market and production base by 2015, the JSC EEE is actively pursuing the reduction, if not elimination, of technical barriers to trade, according to the press release.

This is carried out through harmonisation of standards within the region based on international standards and development of a mutual recognition agreement that aims to assist with the free movement of the EEE in the region and reducing the need for EEE to undergo multiple tests in order to be sold or used in different Asean member states.

This will thus reduce business costs on test reports and increase the certainty of market access for EEE products.

The JSC EEE is responsible for managing the effective implementation of the Asean Sectoral Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) on Electrical and Electronic Equipment, signed on April 5, 2002 in Bangkok, Thailand, said the press release.

The implementation of the Asean Sectoral MRA on EEE has progressed significantly with 13 testing laboratories and two certification bodies listed to provide testing and certification services for the Electrical and Electronic Regulatory Authorities in Asean. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
