Discover Local Treasures At
Kianggeh Market
By SHAM
Bandar Seri
Begawan- The Kianggeh Market in the capital, which is open
daily, is known to sell an array of items from fruits, vegetables,
dried food, live poultries, dried seafood, medicinal items and many
others.
At one corner of the market, a
vendor in particular for many years has actively been selling old
and traditional items found in-Brunei Darussalam.
Owned by Pak Haji, the stall sells
a number of historical and rare items such as old coins in different
shapes and sizes, as well as varieties of roots.
One traditional item worn by a
number of old Bruneian men is the 'Akar Bahar' root. Found under the
sea of a neighbouring country, the round black colour root is
normally worn at the wrist. It is usually between 70 and 80
millimetres in diameter and between five and 10 millimetres thick.
Another well-known local wood
called Limpanas is also sold.
The three-feet long wood is believed
to have a scent, if not unexplained strength, that can scare away
some animals.
Apart from that, an unbelievable collection of old
Brunei photographs, most of which are in black and white, are also
found. The collection also includes
photographs of past public figures.
Also sold among the traditional
items are rings for men, smoke pipes, various types of colourful
stones, old books, walking sticks, old Japanese-era paper money and
Keris. -- Courtesy of Borneo
