Brunei Assures Steady Supply Of
LNG To Japan
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Brunei assured Japan on Monday of its commitment to
continue a stable supply of liquefied natural gas to Japan, as their
ministers met in talks where they also agreed to promote regional
cooperation and bilateral efforts in tackling climate change,
Japanese officials were quoted by Kyodo News International.
Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko
Komura and visiting Brunei Energy Minister Pehin Orang Kaya Seri
Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka
Haji Bakar both welcomed the participation of Japanese firms in
Brunei's ethanol industry and agreed to further bilateral economic
cooperation, the foreign ministry officials said.
Brunei has been a key supplier of
LNG to Japan for over 25 years and the current contract will expire
in 2013. It currently provides about 10 per cent of Japan's total
LNG imports, ranking fifth behind Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia and
Qatar, a ministry official said.
Komura told Pehin Yahya that Brunei
plays an important role in Japan's energy security and requested
that the supplies be continued.

bilateral free trade agreement and are part of the free trade accord
between Japan and the Asean. Both deals require parliamentary
ratification before taking effect. -- Courtesy of Borneo
