By Malai FadleyRizal and Rol Ezam

Bandar Seri Begawan - A 36-year-old local was jailed for a year and four months with three strokes of whipping after pleading guilty to a charge of theft, possession of an "offensive" weapon in a public place and two counts of voluntarily causing hurt.

The defendant, Haji Jafri bin Haji Mohamad stole five bottles of hair shampoo from Hua Ho Department Store's supermarket at Yayasan Complex on February 25, this year, according to Deputy Public Prosecutor Dk Hjh Hana Molina.

A customer realised the defendant's actions and alerted the security guard. Both the security guard and a staff of Hua Ho Department Store gave chase where at one point the defendant stopped and brandished a penknife at both of the men which also caused a cut on the Hua Ho staff's left hand.

The defendant kept on running and went through Kg Bendahara Lama where a villager saw the defendant being chased and assisted by trying to stop the defendant.

The defendant ran and eventually jumped into the river and swam away.

The villager and other people around the area tried to arrest the defendant when he came out of the river but he pull out the pen knife again and caused a cut to the villager.

The defendant was subsequently subdued and arrested by the villager and other men and later handed over to the police at the Bandar Central Station. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
