Kuala Belatit - In Belait District, 302 drivers caught not wearing seatbelts and 73 motorists nabbed for using mobile phones while at the wheel were prosecuted in court, according to police statistics for last year.

The traffic statistics were disclosed at a meeting between commanding officials of Belait District Police Headquarters and the village chiefs and heads in Belait District which took place at the Officers' Mess of Panaga Police Station.

The meeting was held to shed more light on criminal and traffic cases in Belait District and to inform those present about a new police unit called the "STS" Squad (Emergency Respond Squad) which was formed in March this year.

The Belait District Traffic Officer, ASP Ariffin bin Hj Jafaruddin, informed the village chiefs and heads of the services of the Belait Police Traffic such as providing traffic control at junctions, roads and school pedestrian crossings.

Officer Commanding Police District (OCPD) Belait Supt Pg Haji Mohammad Salleh bin Pg Haji Chuchu said that the meeting was held to establish closer relations between the Belait District police officers and the village chief and heads as both parties play a pivotal role in ensuring peace and safety in the district.

Belait OCPD Supt Pg Haji Mohammad Salleh also stressed that the Belait District Police Force would constantly address any shortcomings to boost its quality, productivity and safeguard the welfare of residents. He also urged village chiefs and heads to continuously give cooperation in jointly eliminating crime and ensuring traffic control in their areas. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
