Importance Of Literature Stressed
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Participants to the first Literature in English
Literature for 'O' level students concluded their gathering here
yesterday calling for greater interests in the subject and for such
conference to be held on an annual basis.
Awangku
Abdullah Pengiran Haji Tengah, the acting director of the Curriculum
Development Department, closed the event stressing in his speech the
importance of literature in the education.
"We all know that as a matter of
fact English Literature is a very challenging and thought-provoking
subject," he said. "It requires not just an in-depth knowledge of
the contents but the skills of research and reflection."
It also requires literary skills,
creativity and wide reading from the "Hots" (Higher Order Thinking
Skills) that will undoubtedly be useful to the students' overall
educational development and progress.
Awangku
Abdullah stated that the conference was organised at the most timely
manner as it also served as a part of the student's revision of the
texts for their upcoming '0' level examination, especially for those
expected to sit their June '0' level examinations.
The guest of honour also stressed
that the conference was an opportunity "for participants to share
their valuable experiences and knowledge pertinent to conference's
subject matter."
He expressed his hope that the
conference has sparked an even greater interest in Literature and
for the students to be more motivated in their preparations for
their 'O' level exams.
At the end of his closing speech,
he emphasised the need for the conference to be held on an annual
basis.
The Brunei Times interviewed a few
of the students who participated in the one-day conference.
One of the students, Ahmad Faiz
Haji Zailani, 16, a student at Sayyidina Hassan Secondary School,
said he found the conference to be exhausting yet fun.
The speakers managed to convince
him that "there are more things to learn from literature" than what
he had already learned in school.
He expressed hope that with new
insight gained in the event, he would be more prepared for his '0'
level examinations in November this year. Ahmad Faiz was one of the
very few male students that participated in the conference.
Johnny Lee Kah Meng, 14, expressed
his view that some of his fellow students were interested in
studying English Literature because they had a love for reading
while others intended to "further enhance" their English Language
skills. (AAB1 & JQR1) -- Courtesy
