House Numbering To Improve

Kuala Belatit - The Land Survey Development of the Ministry of Development held yesterday a Customer Appreciation Day in the Belait to seek to respond to common problems facing residents including houses not being numbered or given proper addresses.

According to the Surveyor General, Hj Mohd Jamil Hj Mohd Ali, many houses were not properly numbered and most resorted to using the Lot numbers.

Hj Mohd Jamil said that a study was carried out recently in the Brunei Muara area on the delivery of letters and the effectiveness and accountability of the home numbering system which proved to be faultless.

He said this year's customer appreciation day was held in the Belait district in response to reports by government agencies over the years about the houses in the district not being numbered and given proper addresses.

He said the issue had been raised by the Land Survey Department under the Mukim and Kampong Bordering Task Force Meeting. This, he said, was possibly due to the fact that the residents in the district were not aware or had no knowledge about the home and simpang numbering system that had actually been made available through the Land Survey Department.

In April this year, he added, the Minister of Development launched the Brunei Darussalam Spatial Data Infrastructure (BSDI) which enables access to a digital map through the internet.

The features of the digital information system include a computer system that is capable of storing location data according to their geographical coordinates while text and graphic databases can be converted into relevant information systems.

The BSDI can also unite, provide suggestions, manage, handle and distribute information through a new medium, he added.

"The home and simpang numbering system is very effective if used properly" said Hj Jamil. "However, not all are aware the system.
