Belait Residents Still Not
Utilising Proper House Numbering System
By Liza Mohd
Kuala Belatit
- Among the problems commonly faced in Belait District,
according to the Survey Department, is the use of lot numbers by
house owners in the district to identify the location of their home
instead of the proper sequential numbering system provided by the
department.
As a result, the department
deliberately holds a Customer Service Day to convey information of
its services to the district population, particularly on the
numbering of houses and road junctions in the country, said Surveyor
General of Brunei, Awg Haji Mohd Jamil bin Haji Mohd Ali, at the
launching yesterday morning.
And constantly during the Mukim and
Kampong Task Force Border meeting, government agencies brought up
problem of residents in Belait District not utilising the national
housing numbers or address, he highlighted.
"Based on the house and junction
numbering system, there seem to be no problem if utilised correctly.
But unfortunately people are mistaken or not aware of the house and
junction numbering service provided by the department due to the
lack of continuous information or encouragement on the importance of
using the right address."
The Brunei Surveyor General added
that a research has been carried out in Brunei-Muara District on
mail delivery which enables public to be informed on the
effectiveness of the numbering service system and ensure
accountability of the service. Result from the research revealed no
setbacks.
He further highlighted the
launching of Brunei Darussalam Spatial Data (BSDI) on April 23 this
year by the Minister of Development which embraces technology,
standards, access system and protocols necessary to integrate all of
the Sultanate's geospatial databases and make them available on the
internet.
Among the many benefits of the
digital information include the access to digital geospatial data
and information, as well as the services that help to discover or
find and interact with that data, publish base layers of geographic
data such as elevations, transportation systems and water bodies
that provide context and reference information for Brunei
Darussalam, the Surveyor General concluded in his speech.
At the two-day event, the
department is holding an exhibition which provides detailed
information of the roles and services provided by every department
sections.
The Customer's Day also
interestingly showcase the state-of-the-art telescopes able to view
the planets or the moon as well as for astronomical purposes and
also surveying instruments to determine the beginning and end of
Ramadhan, or the direction of the kiblat for daily prayers.
At the roadshow, invited guests and
visitors also took the opportunity to convert their birthdates to
that of the Hijrah Islamic calendar. -- Courtesy of Borneo
