Head Of Leighton Park School In
Brunei To Hold Info Briefings
By Zasika Musdi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Families who are considering education for their
children in the UK and to find out about the latest developments in
pre-university education will have the opportunity to meet the head
of an English boarding school.
John Dunston, Head of Leighton Park
School (near London), will be holding two information briefings
today (Sunday) at 3pm and on Wednesday, May 14 at 6pm at the Rizqun
International Hotel. This will be his fourth visit to Brunei,
strengthening a long tradition of Bruneian students attending the
prestigious school.
The final two years are the most
important in a student's school career, particularly in the
independent school sector. Students in UK schools have an
increasingly wide choice of qualifications, including 'A' Levels,
the backbone of Sixth Form education for many years; the
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), a challenging
but increasingly popular qualification, highly regarded by
universities and employers (comprising six subject areas including
Maths, Science and Languages, as well as a Theory of Knowledge
paper); the Cambridge Pre-U, in which students study at least three
principal subjects from a choice of 26 and complete an Independent
Research Report and a Global Perspectives portfolio; and the
Government new Diploma, to be introduced in September 2008.
John Dunston will be briefing those
present on all of these, as well as developments on boarding in the
UK. He is one of the few serving Heads in the UK invited to be a
Reporting Inspector for the Independent Schools Inspectorate, and is
also a former Chairman of the Society ofHeads of Independent
Schools. Reassuringly for families overseas, John Dunston is also a
former Chairman of the Association for Education and Guardianship of
International Students.
Leighton Park School, as a
Candidate School for the IB Diploma Programme, is planning to offer
it alongside 'A' Levels from 2009, so the Head is well placed to
discuss these options. Bruneian students who had studied in Leighton
Park in the past have progressed to top UK universities. Many of
them will be meeting up with John Dunston at a Reception for
Leighton Park alumni during his visit.
