Ministry Recalls Three Traditional Medicines

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Ministry of Health has recalled three traditional medicines, two of which containing a substance used to treat male impotency.

The ministry informed the public that based on reports from the Drug Control authorities in the neighbouring country, "Ramuan Asy-Syifa" was found to contain Sildenafil and Paracetamol; Pronoton Capsules manufactured by Shitek Micro Algae Sdn Bhd, Malaysia was found to contain Sildenafil and its analogues; and Edoly Capsules manufactured by Shen Loon She Enterprise Sdn Bhd, Malaysia contained Chlorpheniramine.

Sildenafil is used in the treatment of male impotency and the drug can interact with other medicines resulting in serious adverse affects such as lowering of blood pressure if used together with some anti-hypertensive drugs.

Paracetamol is used for pain and fever and long-term consumption may cause rashes, lowered blood pressure and blood disorder and an overdose may lead to kidney and liver damage. Unsupervised ingestion of Chiorpheniramine may lead to dizziness, lowering of blood pressure, confusion, lack of coordination and drowsiness.

The Ministry of Health through the Pharmacy Enforcement Section, Department of Pharmaceutical Services, conducted an inspection and one of the affected products, Pronoton Capsules, was found to be on sale in the market.

In the interest of public safety, the ministry has instructed importers to recall the affected products from the market and also advised consumers to stop using them.

The ministry reminded the public that it is an offence under Poison Act 1956 to sell any product containing substances that are controlled under the Poisons Act and the penalty for the offence, upon conviction, is a fine of $8,000 or imprisonment of six months.

The public who may have the affected products are advised to destroy or surrender them to the Pharmacy Enforcement Section, Block 2G, 81h floor, BSB Health Centre at Jln Ong Sum Ping. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
