Vocational Skills Make Job-Seekers
Marketable: Acting Minister
By Lyna Mohamad
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The skills and knowledge acquired by graduates at
technical and vocational institutions will hopefully make them
marketable and "mobile" in the job market.
Once they secure a job, they will
increase the confidence of foreign investors in investing in the
country due to the availability of the quality human resources.
These remarks were made at the 9th
National Convocation of Technical and Vocational Institutions
yesterday by the Acting Minister of Education, Pg Dato Seri Setia Dr
Hj Mohammad Pg Hj Abd Rahman.
He also called on principals of
technical and vocational institutions to be more dynamic, proactive
and committed in determining the quality of their institutions and
graduates in order to contribute towards the community and nation's
development.
He noted that the technical and
vocational education institutions play a big role in supporting the
development.
Technical and vocational
institutions are not exempted from the changes under 2lst Century
Education System (SPN 21) which was introduced by the Ministry of
Education, he said.
The Department of Technical
Education's strategic planning (2008-2017) is a follow-up to the SPN
21 as well as to respond to Wawasan Brunei 2035 to achieve its
objectives of producing educated and highly skilled people, enhance
the quality of life and develop a sustainable economy.
In order to produce educated and
highly skilled people, Wawasan 2035 stated that, "We will seek to
build a first-class education system that provides opportunities for
every citizen and resident to meet the requirements of our changing
economy and encourages life-long learning as well as achievements in
sports and arts. Our success will be measured by the highest
international standards."
This shows that the success of the
nation's vision relies not only on the MoE but also depend on the
support and cooperation from all parties in the government and
country.
On knowledge, he said it is clear
that Malay, English, Mathematics and Science subjects need to be
mastered by children at the primary and secondary levels for them to
proceed to higher learning institutions.
If they can master these four
subjects, more of them will be able to pursue their tertiary
education locally or abroad.
He noted that the majority failed
to achieve credits in English and Mathematics such as in the ‘0O
level examinations which reduced their opportunities to study in
higher learning institutions.
In this regard, he disclosed that
