Local Enforcers Attend Course In
The US
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Five personnel from four separate Brunei law
enforcement agencies recently returned from Roswell, New Mexico, the
United States after attending a month-long training session,
entitled "Advanced Management Course", which was taught by the US
Department of State's International Law Enforcement Academy -
Roswell (ILEA-R).
Those who attended the academy
included one participant from the Royal Brunei Police Force, the
Narcotics Control Bureau and the Internal Security Department, and
two participants from the Anti-Corruption Bureau.
In order to be eligible to attend
the course, all participants must have attended the previous course
at ILEA in Bangkok.
The mission of the International
Law Enforcement Academy – Roswell is to provide advanced criminal
justice management instruction to mid and senior law enforcement
officials from around the world and expose them to the American
society and institutions.
The goals were to enhance the
ability of experienced law enforcement officials to combat crime in
their respective countries and encourage bilateral and regional
cooperation in combating transnational crime.
Some of the additional objectives
in attending ILEA-R included providing an environment within law
enforcement that encourages continual personal and professional
development, preparing law enforcement management officials for
increased responsibilities and improving managerial capabilities of
programme participants in combating international crime.
ILEA-R is administered through a
Cooperative Agreement with the New Mexico Institute of Mining and
Technology (NMT). NMT has partnered with Science Applications
International Corporation, Sam Houston State University and Eastern
New Mexico University - Roswell to operate the academy.
The US Department of State's
Regional Security Office, from the US Embassy in Brunei, has also
assisted in the selection and preparation for officials to attend
the course.
The ILEA-R's Advanced Management
Course is typically offered to countries in Southeast Asia once
every two years. During this session, the participants from Brunei
were also joined by their counterparts from Malaysia and Singapore,
furthering the goal of promoting international cooperation amongst
law enforcement agencies.
On their free time, the entire
contingent had the opportunity to visit and enjoy the many sight
attractions, including the UFO Museum, Grand Canyon National
Monument and the famous town of Santa Fe.-- Courtesy of Borneo
