Tungku Primary School Contributes To Billion Tree Campaign
By Saiful Rizal

Bandar Seri Begawan - Tungku Primary School yesterday held a Billion Tree Campaign in its effort to raise awareness on the importance of trees in all cultures and how forests provide environmental protection.

Teachers, children and some parents brought tree saplings and flower seedlings to be planted in the school compound. Some parents also took part in the cleaning campaign.

The Billion Tree Campaign was part of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) major global tree-planting campaign to encourage people, businesses and governments to enter tree-planting pledges online. The objective is to plant at least one billion trees worldwide in 2007.

The idea for the Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign was inspired by Professor Wangari Maathai, Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2004 and founder of Kenya 8217's Green Belt Movement, which has planted more than 30 million trees in 12 African countries since 1977.
