Reducing Road Accidents Through
The 3E Approach

Begawan - Eighty participants who completed the "Defensive
Driving" programme yesterday received their certificates which was
presented by the guest of honour, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry
of Communications Dato Paduka Hj Md Yusof bin Hj Md Hassan.
The presentation ceremony was held at
the Police Training Field in Gadong.
The chief guest in his speech said
that the National Road Safety Council, with members comprising staff
from the government and private sectors, has planned and implemented
various programme aimed at reducing road accidents in the country
through the 3E approach: Education, Engineering and Enforcement.
This 3E approach is focused on road
safety incentives and programmes to educate road users through the
mass media, exhibition, talk, roadshow and so on, he added. On the
engineering aspect, he said, the programme focused on the quality
standard and road safety infrastructure where vehicles must be
roadworthy.
Meanwhile, on the aspect of
enforcement, the programme highlighted on the implementation and
reinforcement of laws and traffic regulations. These three aspects are
important with the purpose to monitor and evaluate road safety issues,
he said.
He added that the Defensive Driving
course has taken into account the 3E aspects in an effort to enhance
road safety through education and training. He said the course was one
of the early steps taken to avoid road accidents in the form of
training in building up self-confidence among the participants.
The course was timely in spreading
the information to achieve the standard of safe and efficient driving
skills. He urged the participants to make full use of the knowledge
and experience they gained from the two-day course. The Defensive
Driving course was jointly organised
by National Road Safety Council of
Brunei and Michelin and Sin Hup Huat Tyre Company.
Earlier, the Director of Land
Transport Department, Awg Haji Mat Zahri bin Hj Yusof also delivered a
welcoming speech followed by remarks from the General Manager of
Michelin (S) Ltd, Mr Alian Waha.
He said Michelin and Sin Hup Huat
Tyre Company are looking forward to work closely with the Brunei Road
Safety Council, Land Transport Department and Ministry of
Communications to promote and create awareness of road safety in
Brunei.
The best participants of the course
each received a certificate and trophy from the organisers. The
recipients were PC 3552 Saiful Rizal Awg Damit, Awg Ishak bin Hj
Mahadi, Snr Insp Md
Salleh
bin Harun and Dayang Aridah Muzalipah bte Haji Matzain.
