Stabbing Incident: Filipino Still Critical
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
SEVERAL days after he slashed and stabbed his
fiancée to death last Tuesday, the Filipino who also cut his neck in a suicide attempt was still in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit, Raja Isteri Pg Anak Saleha Hospital.
The Royal Brunei Police Director of Criminal Investigation said the case was still being investigated and they have yet to interview the accused who is still not out of critical condition.
Hospital sources said the man was in and out of the life supporting machine since he was admitted to the hospital last Tuesday after the incident. Eyewitnesses also came to the Borneo Bulletin to give a more detailed account on the incident.
A man who operated a business establishment a few doors from the restaurant where the incident happened said the Filipino man came storming to the Mile 1 restaurant where his
fiancée, a Filipina in her 20s, worked as a waitress. "There was a big argument between the two. Suddenly the man grabbed the woman from behind and took out a sharp blade cutter.
"He slashed the fiancée in the stomach, hand and face. He then turned the blade on him and slashed his neck both sides.
"The woman writhing in pain and clutching her stomach ran outside near a fountain while the man continued to chase her. She then collapsed and the man also fell unconscious," he alleged.
He added that while people surrounded the woman trying to help her, suddenly the man woke up and ran to the kitchen.
He then ran outside towards the victim brandishing a kitchen knife allegedly stabbing his lover in the stomach before running back to hide in the kitchen.
The second stab was said to have pierced the liver and may have caused her death.
"It took him an hour to come out and surrender. At first he called up his friend, a Filipino, before a representative of the Philippines Embassy's Welfare Officer Nasser Mustapha took over the negotiation," he said.
His friend when contacted yesterday said he could not persuade him to surrender because he wanted to die.
He told the friend his frustrations and mentioned several names which caused his misery including the names of people he wanted to thank.
"I was nervous because I did not want to be blamed by him later if he survived the incident as he had said he wanted to commit suicide.
"He passed me his wrist watch before Welfare Officer Nasser took over the negotiation," he said. The Filipino came out to surrender after about an hour. Eyewitnesses said he nearly passed out when he was carried out in a stretcher to the hospital.
