Museum Honours Brunei's Women
Broadcasters
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Department of Brunei Museums has organised a
project entitled "An Oral History of the Past Experiences of
Women Broadcasters in Radio Brunei".
It was held in conjunction with the
International Museum Day.
Two prominent women radio announcers
were invited to share their experience with the audience.
The project is part of the archive
department's effort to compile the oral history collection based on
the experiences of Pengiran Hajah Intan Binti Pengiran Datu Penghulu
Pengiran Haji Apong and Pengiran Hajah Mariam Binti Pengiran Metali,
two women pioneers in the Radio Brunei Service from the 1950's
onwards.
Pengiran Hajah Intan's career at
Radio Brunei involved working as an announcer newscaster and programme
producer.
She was involved in 'Bintang Radio'
and 'Aneka Hiburan' programes recorded in and outside the studio, as
well as conducted interviews around towns and villages.
Her last post involved the duties of
vision mixer, master control room director and head of planning and
performances.
Meanwhile Pengiran Hajah Mariam
started her career as an announcer with Radio Brunei in the late 50's.
Among her duties were producing
women's, youth and religious programmes, radio dramas, short stories
for children and entertaining song dedications.
She was also a coordinator for Malay
programs in the 70's.
She was promoted to senior producer,
and later headed the Malay radio section until her retirement in 1994,
The department hopes to promote and
honour government officers through the oral history collection, which
will be updated from time to time. It also hopes to put together a
source of research and knowledge for the public, particularly
students.
It was also aimed to bring to mind
the services rendered by the officers as well as their past
experiences to motivate the future generations. -- Courtesy
