Sultan Tours Penang's Industrial
Heartland
Penang -
His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah the Sultan of Brunei has
taken a closer look at Penang's key agency in the spearheading state
development when he visited the Penang Development Corporation (PDC).
It is an itinerary of His Majesty's three-day working visit to Penang.
The Penang Development Corporation,
is a state owned agency entrusted with the task of putting Penang as a
developed and progressive state.
On arrival at the PDC complex, the
Chief Minister, the Honorable Tan Sri Doctor Koh Tsu Koon together
with top officials of the corporation, welcomed His Majesty.
Other officials and staff of the PDC
accorded a warm welcome to the Brunei monarch.
The Penang Development Corporation
was established in 1969 to initiate, plan, implement and promote Socio
Economic Development projects.
The Chief Minister of Penang in his
briefing outlined the idea behind to the formation of PDC. The
corporation has transformed Penang into a state of progress through
industrialization, tourism and trade promotion.
Human resource development and
strategic investment are also focused.
PDC is also working closely with the
people, the private sector and other government agencies.
Today, there are more than 700
factories in the PDC industrial area, providing employment for 160,000
people. Among those countries, which have invested in Penang are
Taiwan, Japan, the United States, Germany and Singapore.
His Majesty and the Chief Minister of
Penang shared a lighter moment after the official briefing. The focus
of the interaction was a digital camera.
His Majesty ended the visit with a
tour to the Penang Bridge that links the Penang Island with the
mainland. The bridge is more than 13 kilometer long providing
efficient movement of transportation. The bridge that complements a
ferry service, which operates round the clock is one of the longest
bridges in Asia. It costs RM850 million. -- Courtesy
