Heart Centre to Benefit Locals

Begawan - The
two bypass operations successfully performed in the Sultanate at the
Gleneagles JPMC Cardiac Centre have brought about another milestone in
the country’s health care system and the historical landmark
inaugurated the establishment of a Heart Centre in Brunei.
Many patients especially the locals would benefit from the services
provided by the centre, which aims to bring high quality health care
closer to the people here.
Gleneagles
JPMC, a subsidiary of Parkway Group Healthcare of Singapore, is the
Asia’s largest private healthcare organization, which owns the
premier Gleneagles Hospital and Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore
and several hospitals in the region.
“Our heart centre is fully operational and equipped with the
latest medical equipment and technology. We have a very experienced
consultant surgeon, consultant cardiologists and nurses to support and
provide all specialised cardiac and cardio thoracic care and clinical
services.
“Our long-term objective is to establish a world class heart centre
for the people of Brunei and the region,” said Heng Thea Hwi, the
General Manager and the director of Finance and Operations of the
centre.
Associate Professor Reida El Oakley said,” At our heart centre, we
have capability to perform by pass operation, valve replacement and
repair, correction or congenial heart defect and major lung
operations.”
Mr Heng said,” To date,
we have performed 93 angiograms, 11 angioplasties and 3 open heart
surgeries. All of them are very successful and without any
complication. It is estimated about every 150 open heart surgeries are
performed annually in Brunei Darussalam.
“Our Chief Surgeon Associate Professor Reida El Oakley has performed
more than 1000 operations, with 100 percent success rate on elective
bypass operation.”
Mr
Heng said,” With the availability of the heart centre in Brunei
Darussalam, Patients are now able to receive high quality cardiac care
and medical services without travelling overseas for their medical
treatments.
“This
could save money for the Brunei government as well as patients in
travelling and accommodation expenses.” Most importantly, patients
could also receive emotional supports from their family members,
relatives and friends without any interruption of day to day life.”
Associate
Professor Reida El Oakley, who joined the centre as Chief Surgeon for
Heart and Lung Surgery for Heart and lung Surgery, is also an Honorary
Adjunct Associate Professor Of Surgery National University Of
Singapore.
His
training in cardio thoracic surgery in London and Manchester started
from 1987 until 1999. He came to Singapore in 1999 and worked for the
National University Hospital Of Singapore for 4 years
“The
most dangerous symptom of coronary arteries diseases is chest
discomfort or pain that common exertion or after having heavy meal.
This is a sign that come on exertion or having heavy meal. This is a
sign that the heart muscle is not getting enough blood supply. If this
is allowed to continue, it will result in the heart attack which could
be fatal,” said Associate Professor Reida El Oakley.
“Bypass
operation prevents heart attack and therefore give patient a better
chance to live longer and free of pain
“World
wide, more than 1 million people undergoing bypass operations every
year with more than 97 percent success rate,” he said…
The
first two patients who have bypass operations; Lamat Anak Japang and
Hamid Hj Nayan were very pleased with their progress after their
operations.
Both
patients stated that the excellent recovery was beyond their
expectation. They were able to walk 2 days after the operation and
both were discharged after 5 days of their surgeries. --
