Twelve Cans Of Tiger Beer Each Cost Two $500

Bandar Seri Begawan - A 24-year-old ex-soldier and his 22-year-old unemployed friend were fined $500 or a month in jail each when they both pleaded guilty to smuggling 12 cans of Tiger Beer each.

The Royal Customs and Excise Department Prosecuting Officer said the two, Hj Shahrul Azmi Hj Aliamat and Jimehrul Akob sped away when they saw that Customs Preventive Officers and Enforcement Officers of Religious Department conducting an operation in the Kuala Lurah border check point.

However, the Toyota Super Kijang driven by Hj Shahrul was finally detained in Simpang 223 of Jalan Kampong Kuala Lurah. Jimehrul was sitting in the passenger's seat.

Upon inspection, the officers found 24 cans of Tiger Beer. Hj Shahrul admitted that 12 cans of Tiger Beer belonged to him, while the remaining cans of beer belonged to Jimehrul, the court heard.

Both confessed to buying the beer from an Iban man at a nearby stall across the border in Sarawak near Kuala Lurah. They also admitted buying the contraband goods for personal consumption.
