The public needs to be educated on
the use of roundabouts, especially for the new interchanges in Kiulap,
noted observers. They said that more efforts should be taken to
enlighten people on legal rules governing the movement of traffic at
the aforementioned place.
"There had been too many
accidents there because the public has been confused over which of the
three lanes they should use. Therefore, such information must be
delivered through the national television or via distributed
pamphlets," they said.
They added there had been some
complaints from the public in the letters page of the Borneo Bulletin
in regards to this problem.
Apart from knowing which lanes to
take for different designated routes, the public should also be
advised on road safety rules like which side to use, maximum speed and
turning requirements among others.
Road users tend to take things for
granted nowadays. Some even drive in the outermost lane to go into the
opposite interchange.
"By right the outermost lane
should only be taken by vehicles that were heading to the adjoining
interchange and not jump to other lanes for other interchanges.
"Lack of driving skills is
rarely an issue as most drivers do not need training as much as they
need education and experience.
"However, road engineers must
design road systems that attempt to reduce the frequency and impact of
human error," they concluded.
