Chung Hwa Middle School Bandar Seri Begawan emerged as overall champion of the 11th eXPLOMATHS 2003. It defeated St. George's School in the grand final of the mathematics quiz for primary schools yesterday morning at Sultan Sharif Ali Secondary School in Jalan Muara.

This year's competition where the theme was "Exploring Mathematics through ICT" was participated by 93 government and non-government primary schools throughout the country. The two finalists reached the final after vying against the other schools in the earlier rounds.

This year's quiz was hosted by Sultan Sharif Ali Secondary School as the convening school and co-hosted by Sekolah Rendah Delima Satu as well as sponsored by Brunei Shell Petroleum Co. Sdn. Bhd.

The chief guest was Haji Mohd. Zaini Bin Haji Awg. Omar, BSP- Head of Relation and Human Resources Services, who presented prizes and certificates to the winners. Acting Principal of Sultan Sharif Ali Secondary School, Hajah Zaliha Binti Haji Dollah in her welcoming speech, expressed her thanks to the Ministry of Education for entrusting the role of convening school to her school. She expressed her appreciation to Brunei Shell Petroleum Co. Sdn. Bhd. for its continued support and sponsorship in making the contest a success.

She said the theme "Exploring Mathematics Through ICT" was selected with the hope of upgrading student awareness of the use of ICT in mathematics. She added it enhanced the effectiveness of teaching and learning mathematics through students' use of ICT.

The national Maths Quiz (eXPLOMATHS 2003) was aimed at promoting mathematics as an interesting and useful subject; increase student awareness of the use of ICT in mathematics; as well as develop student interest in mathematics through participation in various mathematical tasks and activities.

Yesterday, teachers and students also witnessed dances and traditional music of "Guling Tangan" performed by Sultan Sharif Ali Secondary School students. They also viewed an ICT exhibition participated by primary and secondary schools.
