Bank Frees Turtles and Cleans Up
The Beach

Begawan - Hundreds of people gathered at the Muara Beach in the
capital yesterday to take part in a campaign to clean up a popular
resort.
More than 400 HSBC Bank staff
together with their families took part in the cleaning campaign.
The community project also coincided
with the releasing of nearly 60 turtles into the sea.
Also joining the campaign was the
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Dato Awang Haji
Mohammad Yusof.
The first six turtles released were
Hawksbill Turtles aged between nine to 15 months.
The rest were three months old Olive
Ridley Turtles.
The turtles were obtained from the
Turtles Nursery Centre, Marine Department. Its release was part of the
efforts to increase the population of turtles in Brunei waters where
the turtle population is reported declining.
Turtles are listed as protected
species under the Wildlife Act. Capturing and stealing turtle's eggs
carries a fine of $2,000 and a year imprisonment.
Meanwhile, a similar cleaning
campaign was held at another well-known attraction in the country.
The campaign was held at the Wasai
Long Kadir in the Belait District.
It was organised by the Brunei Shell
Petroleum Company led by the Deputy Managing Director of BSP, Awang
Haji Zainal Abidin.
Villagers of Labi area and the Brunei
Shell Ladies Association were also involved in the cleaning work.
Wasai Long Kadir is a popular natural
attraction known for its unique and beautiful natural landscape and it
was opened to the public in the early 90s.
Since then it has become a popular
