Bank Frees Turtles and Cleans Up The Beach

Bandar Seri Begawan - Hundreds of people gathered at the Muara Beach in the capital yesterday to take part in a campaign to clean up a popular resort.

More than 400 HSBC Bank staff together with their families took part in the cleaning campaign.

The community project also coincided with the releasing of nearly 60 turtles into the sea.

Also joining the campaign was the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Dato Awang Haji Mohammad Yusof.

The first six turtles released were Hawksbill Turtles aged between nine to 15 months.

The rest were three months old Olive Ridley Turtles.

The turtles were obtained from the Turtles Nursery Centre, Marine Department. Its release was part of the efforts to increase the population of turtles in Brunei waters where the turtle population is reported declining.

Turtles are listed as protected species under the Wildlife Act. Capturing and stealing turtle's eggs carries a fine of $2,000 and a year imprisonment.

Meanwhile, a similar cleaning campaign was held at another well-known attraction in the country.

The campaign was held at the Wasai Long Kadir in the Belait District.

It was organised by the Brunei Shell Petroleum Company led by the Deputy Managing Director of BSP, Awang Haji Zainal Abidin.
