Shoppers left in stinky situation
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Some members of the public have expressed their disatisfication over the so-called "cleanliness" of the environment around the country. Some have accused scrupulous traders in the capital for throwing their left-over food in nearby bins. They said a fast food operator threw left-overs in the bin causing flies to swarm the bin and worms and larvae to be produced.

The foul odour emitted from the bin can be smelt from afar.

They were hoping for the authority to take action as the nation is serious in ensuring clean and quality environment by passing the necessary legislation and instituting penalties for those who contravene it. But sadly, there is sometimes a gap between legislation and enforcement.

"Despite the existence of environmental regulations and standards, there continue to be cases of non-compliance and disregard for the environment," they said.

They said an area with high environmental standards is not only healthier but will also bring about economic benefit resulting from property and rental appreciation.

Residential and commercial areas with filthy surroundings and polluted air will inevitably push residents to look for better locations, they said.
