Flood Danger Strikes Brunei's
Kampong Ayer
Bandar Seri
Begawan - High alert was sounded in Brunei's famed Water
Village yesterday when water rose to dangerous levels threatening to
flood homes.
There was a marked change in Kampong
Ayer yesterday when the village experienced unusual high tides during
daylight hours and not at night, as is the norm.
The water level in Kampong Ayer,
where thousands of people live in stilt houses on the Brunei River,
reached up to about 2.6 metres yesterday afternoon.
At around 11 yesterday morning, when
RTB crew recorded a reading, the water level had risen to 2.5 metres.
This indicated danger levels. Kampong Ayer experienced high tides
around 10 in the morning up to 3 in the afternoon.
Residents in the Water Village are
advised to be alert for floods following heavy rainfall and as the
tide rises. They are also reminded to ensure their families are safe
and especially keep a close eye on the children.
Operators of water taxis and
speedboat transports are also reminded to proceed with extra caution
and at slower speed when passing near residential areas in Kampong
Ayer.
