Japanese To Beat The Drum In Brunei

Bandar Seri Begawan - Bruneians are in for a real treat when ‘Oedo Sukeroku Talko’, a predominant pioneer in the world of Japanese drum performance, arrives in Brunei to give two electrifying performances.

Taking place during the ASEAN-Japan Exchange Year 2003, the group will be performing on May 21 at 8pm and May 22 at 3pm, in the Cesar Grand Hall at the Orchid Garden Hotel, Berakas.

On May 21 the performance will be officially opened by the Guest of Honour, Dato Awang Haji Suyoi, Deputy Minister of Education.

The Ambassador of Japan, H. E. Mr Hara Satoshi, will also be present at the opening ceremony.

‘Oedo Sukeroku Taikn’ has played a vital role in the development of talko music and has made an extensive contribution to its current, worldwide popularity.

The group, established by Mr KOBAYASHI Seido in 1959, follows the traditional drumming style originating in Tokyo's downtown Yushima area.

The name 'Sukeroku' comes from the chic and spirited model of 'Edokko' or 'people of old Tokyo'.

'Sukeroku' is the main character in the Kabuki play, ‘Sukerokur Yukari Edo Zakura’, a play which sums up old Tokyo's charm. Such charm is embodied in the group’s style of drumming, with its lifting rhythm, perfectly matched ensemble and acrobatic physical expressions.

The performances by 'Oedo Sukeroku Taiko' will provide Bruneians with an insight into this unique style of Japanese performance, arousing the senses of both sound and sight to their fullest.

All those attending can expect a dramatic and stunning presentation. The event will offer another great opportunity for Bruneians to embrace an important aspect of Japanese culture, further strengthening the bonds and developing understanding between Brunei and Japan.

The event is co-hosted by the Embassy of Japan and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, in cooperation with the Japan Foundation.

Admission to both performances is free and everyone is welcome to attend.

The dress code is smart casual.
