All Bruneian Manned Tankers Soon
Sighted
Bandar
Seri Begawan - The Bruneianisation programme conducted by
Brunei Shell, has provided Bruneians with job positions that were
traditionally held by foreigners.
With tremendous support from relevant
government authorities, the programme has proven to be extremely
successful.
The signing of a marine training
sponsorship contract between Brunei Shell Tankers, (BST) and Brunei
marine cadets marked another milestone in recognising Bruneians in the
field of shipping.
This is in line with the country's
vision in making Brunei the centre of shipping hub in the region.
The acting Managing Director of
Brunei Shell Tankers Mr Reider Saugstad said, his department has
trained 56 marine cadets including this year's new intakes and to date
has about 150 local crews.
He also said that if BST continues
the successful trend the BST ships could potentially be run with a
100% Bruneian manning within four to five years.
Present to witness the signing of
contract was the Deputy Minister of Finance, Dato Paduka Awang Haji
Yaakub. Nine young Bruneian males will undergo training at the Warsash
College in the United Kingdom.
On completion of their course, the
cadets will hold the positions either as engineering cadet or deck
cadet. A total of 14 cadets have been trained this year to meet the
BST target of four ships manned by Bruneian second officers and third
engineers by the end of 2006. --
