Jail And Fine For Coconut Thieves

Bandar Seri Begawan - Thieves are not only eyeing on valuable things these days, but anything that they could lay their hands on including coconuts.

Yesterday, an 18-year-old local man, Eddi Alex Hasmirol Abdullah and his accomplice in crime, Brunei Permanent Resident Md Zaini Zakaria, 22, pleaded guilty to stealing 16 coconuts from a vegetable stall in Kg Lambak. And they committed the offence for money to play computer games.

The presiding Magistrate, Hj Abdullah Soefri bonded Eddi for good behaviour and fined him $500 or a month in jail in default while Md Zaini was sentenced to two months in jail.

Magistrate Hj Abdullah gave Eddi three weeks to settle the fine.

According to the Prosecuting Officer, Hjh Najwa Hj Abdul Majid, both the defendants went to the said stall at No. 441 in Kg Lambak Kiri five days ago. Eddi stole the coconuts, which were then kept inside the car Md Zaini drove.

They drove to Kg Delima in Berakas and sold the 16 coconuts for $11 to someone there. Upon information, CID police managed to track down both culprits and arrested them two days later, Hjh Najwa said. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
