Police, Syariah Affairs Link Up At
Kuala Lurah Against Muslim Drinkers
By Azaraimy HH & Hj Minor Absah
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Limau Manis and Jerudong police and the Syariah
Affairs Department in a joint effort blocked Muslims crossing the
border for a drink Tuesday night at the Kuala Lurah Control Post.
However during the operation
codenamed "Ops Semerbak 16" two Muslims were held for
allegedly drinking alcohol
In a slight change of tactic from the
previous operation where a roadblock was conducted to catch Muslims
who had crossed the border to get intoxicated, this time around it was
decided that prevention was better than detection.
The operation by some 70 policemen
and 10 religious officials was conducted in a similar fashion but it
was also to prevent Muslims from crossing over the border to obtain
alcohol.
Muslims found to have consumed
alcohol can be charged under Section 1-7-2 of the Islamic Religious
Council Act and Khadi Courts, Chapter 77, 1984 Amendment, where it is
an offence for any Muslim to drink or sell and buy alcoholic drinks.
The operation mounted from 7:30pm
until 10:30pm was also conducted to nab errant drivers who had
committed driving offences, where in the operation several modified
cars were caught.
The operation also saw several people
arrested; some caught smuggling chicken and others for bringing more
than the permitted amount of liquor into the Sultanate.
Cases are still under investigation.
However, DSP Hj Hassan, Assistant OCPD of Jerudong Police District,
said that there has been a decrease in the number of cases in the face
of stronger operations being conducted. --
