Brunei Marks Nurses And Midwives International Day

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Nurses and Midwives International Day is observed every May 12. In conjunction with the occasion, the Health Ministry has lined up many activities to show its dedication to serve the public.

The acting director of nursing services, Sharifah Hajah Normah Malai Haji Othman said this who added that the Nurses and Midwives International Day is held especially to commemorate the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of nursing.

This year, she said, the theme is "Nursing Fighting Aids Stigma, Caring For All". In emphasizing the message, Sharifah Hajah Normah said many programs are being arranged to lessen the stigma and discriminations facing Aids patients.

Many people, she explained, are afraid of Aids/HIV carriers because of lack of knowledge about the disease. One of way of raising awareness to reduce the stigma is by holding a blood donation.

Haji Sabtu, the acting officer of nursing at the Intensive Care Unit, said he had to keep abreast with out relevant medical and health knowledge to confront the ever challenging career.

He also said he had to strive harder constantly to be proficient in modern technology equipment used in medical life today.

As a nurse, the career not only requires him to be competent in the psychological, mental and physical knowledge but also keep in stride with the technological development.

To keep in touch with the progress, he said it is necessary for a nurse to be pro-active and motivated in order to improve his career.

As a nursing officer, Dayang Hajah Nariah Ahmad from Ripas Hospital said her self-confidence was put to the test when she is required to give her best in caring for difficult patients.

And if that's not enough, she herself joined others in donating blood for a worthy cause. The blood donation campaign in conjunction with the international day is all about caring and concern for patients who need blood.
