By Rol Ezam

Bandar Seri Begawan - A 34-year-old local man and a 35-year-old permanent resident were each fined $400 or two months' imprisonment in default yesterday when they pleaded guilty to their respective charge of smuggling beer.

Roslee Hj Suami pleaded guilty to possessing nine cans of Tiger Beer, while Harun Hj Muhammad pleaded guilty to smuggling eight cans of Tiger beer in his car. They were sentenced by Chief Magistrate Dk Rostaina Pg Hj Duraman in the Magistrate's Court.

According to the Customs and Excise Prosecutor, Hj Ahmad Hj Abd Rahman, eleven days ago, a group of Customs Preventive Officers conducted an operation in a bid to eliminate the illegal selling of liquor near Simpang 15 in Jalan Gadong.

In the operation, the car belonging to Harun was stopped after the two men were suspected of buying liquor in the area.

The officers found the beer in the back seat of the car, Hj Ahmad said.

Roslee confessed that the nine cans of beer belonged to him, while the rest of the beer belonged to Harun.

Hj Ahmad said both of the defendants brought the beer for their personal consumption and bought the liquor from a man, believed to be a foreigner, named Basil at a flat at Simpang 126 in Kg Tumasek.

All items seized were ordered destroyed.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
