Cross-border punters at Miri cockfights

Some Bruneians were amongst those who allegedly gambled at cockfights which were frequently held at Bukit Kanada, Miri, a few hours' drive from Brunei Darussalam. The alleged presence of Bruneians placing their bets at the cockfights was reported in Berita Harian, the Malay language Malaysian newspapers. It stated that the participation in the gambling activity was not limited to the local people of Miri but the gamblers also came from Brunei Darussalam, Philippines and Indonesia.

It added people bet as much as RM1,000 and RM10,000 in one cockfighting session, held every end of the week there.

The cockfighting sessions at Bukit Kanada, Miri had been raided by the police in the past but the higher demand for such gambling events caused the activity to still be carried out until recently.
