Brunei Princess Launches Theme
Garden On Earth Day

Muara - Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Majeedah Nuurul Bolqiah launched 'Theme Garden' at the Muara Beach, in conjunction with Earth Day 2003 yesterday.

It was organised by the Department of Environment, Park and Recreation of the Ministry of Development with the cooperation of Mukim Serasa.

Upon arrival the organiser's executive committee, Penghulus and Ketua Kampongs of Mukim Serasa, greeted Her Royal Highness.

Earth Day is celebrated by the United Nation's Environment Programme (UNEP) every April 22.

Brunei has organised a number of activities to commemorate Earth Day. They include a radio quiz and cleaning campaigns involving the public.

The Acting Assistant Director of Environment, Park and Recreation Awang Roslan bin Haji Tajaah in his welcoming speech said explained the department's objectives and long-term plan in dispensing it's duties and functions.

At the function, Her Royal Highness presented prizes to winners of a Radio Quiz and those who have collected the biggest amount of rubbish among adults and children.

The cleaning campaign on the Muara Beach was another activity to commemorate Earth Day 2003.

It was participated by all including young children which was a good way of teaching them to appreciate a clean environment, an organiser commented.

The Muara Beach, a popular spot for the public for various recreational activities, especially during weekends has been polluted with rubbish indiscriminately disposed of by irresponsible people. They disregard the importance of keeping the environment clean and threw away bottles, cans, paper, plastic wrappers and other food wastes.

Her Royal Highness also has an opportunity to watch a friendly football match and tug-of-war event.

The Department of Environment, Park and Recreation has provided sports facilities at the Muara Beach. Provision of sports facilities and works to upgrade would be extended to other recreational areas are under the department's supervision.

Her Royal Highness then declared the theme garden open.

It is meant to be a place where everyone could spent time relaxing and enjoying the scenery.

The garden has been planted with various plants and ornamental shrubs and there is also a playground for children.

It is hoped that this recreation area will be fully utilised by the public and at the same protecting it from vandalism and from becoming a dumping ground for rubbish.  -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
