Brunei Police Kept On Their Toes
As It Comes Under Royal Watch

Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei ruler's
sudden call kept the Royal Brunei Police Force on their toes all day
yesterday.
His Majesty who is the force's
Inspector General visited several sections of the police headquarters
in Gadong in quick succession and also visited the Central Police
Station in the capital.
On arrival at the Police Headquarters
in Gadong, His Majesty was welcomed by the Commissioner of the Royal
Brunei Police, Dato Haji Abdul Rahman.
His Majesty then received a guard of
honour mounted by the Royal Brunei Police, which he later inspected.
Then, His Majesty proceeded to the
headquarters conference room for a briefing. Doa Selamat was read by
the imam of the Royal Brunei Police Force's Surau, Awang Haji Abdullah
Bin Karim. This was followed by an hour-long closed-door session with
the police chief and senior police officers.
His Majesty then scrutinised. various
departments such as the Administration, Finance, Criminal
Investigations Department as well as the Social and Sports
Departments.
The mission of the Royal Brunei
Police Force is to maintain law and order in accordance with the power
conferred by any written law of the land in the most professional
manner.
Among its targets and objectives of
the Royal Brunei Police is to minimise the number of transgressions
against the law and immediate restoration of public order and safety
following any disruptive incidents as well as to maintain and carry
all resolutions passed and adopted by the ASEANAPOL Conference and the
Interpol General Assembly.
The Children and Women Abuse
Investigations Unit was also scrutinised by His Majesty.
His Majesty Sultan toured the closed
section or restricted area, the nerve centre of the force where
confidential information is received and kept.
The section also houses the crime
investigation department and an operation room. This area uses a
high-tech system known as AFIS, or automated fingerprint system.
Also under scrutiny by the Brunei
ruler was the crime unit, which handles major criminal cases such as
murder and possession of weapons.
His Majesty visited the pass section,
which handles the issuance of new passes for various government
departments that require pass clearance, such as Radio Television
Brunei and the Brunei International Airport.
Here, His Majesty posed for his own
photo to be taken. His Majesty's next visit was the Central Police
Station in the capital.
Here the Officer Commanding Police
Brunei District who talked about the role and responsibilities of the
station briefed His Majesty.
His Majesty also toured the police
station and had a closer look at several stored confiscated items,
which included stolen items. The items being kept and will be produced
in court as evidence.
His Majesty then continued his visit
to the nearby investigation section and traffic section building.
Among the targets and objectives of
the section is to maximise the detection of criminal activities and
the conviction of criminals. The force should also be ready in
responding against public and society's needs beside enhancing the
police professionalism through proper training of officers and others.
The force also aims to increase
community involvement in fighting crime and transgression of national
laws while maximising educational programmes for the general public
relating to traffic rules and regulations.
From the sections of investigation
and traffic building, his majesty visited the force's flat next door
which houses the force's bachelors and married personnel of the rank
and file personnel.
The Brunei ruler's visit to the
building showed His Majesty's concern for the welfare and living
conditions of the force members.
The seven-storey flat has been
occupied since 1975 and houses seventy-two units. Each unit has two
bedrooms, a common room, a kitchen and one bathroom.
His Majesty's final stop was at the
compound payment counter which is located next to the flat.
The Royal Brunei Police Force is one
of the oldest institutions in the country having started in 1906 and
was then known as the Brunei Police Force.
It was officially established on 1st
January 1921 and was given the honour with its present name as the
Royal Brunei Police Force in 1965. -- Courtesy
