Self-grown flowers for Mother's Day
By James Kon

Chung Hwa Middle School Kindergarten children proudly hold up their flowers

All set for Mother's Day

In an ingenious gesture guaranteed to win over the heart of any loving mother, around a hundred mothers with children in Chung Hwa Middle School's Kindergarten will be receiving fresh flowers from their young ones that they grew themselves especially for Mother's Day today. The moving idea of "I Plant Flower for Mother" is an activity that was started two months ago, when the children from kindergarten planted seeds at the school with the notion of harvesting their own flowers to give to their mother on Mother's Day.

After two months of enthusiastic weeding and pruning, yesterday saw fruit of the children's labour - beautiful flowers in full bloom with which the children will touch their mothers' hearts.

The flowers were fitting gifts to the mothers for their unselfish love and devotion to the family, and also served as tokens of appreciation from an entire generation of children.

This was the fourth consecutive year that the Chung Hwa pre-school children showered their mothers with gifts of fresh flowers and their own hand-made Mother's Day cards. The idea of planting flowers also serves as an educational project to teach the young children about natural science.

As a part of the "exclusive discovery curriculum" being adopted at the Chung Hwa Kindergarten, the children are not only taught how to grow flowers annually. They are also tutored in several aspects of personal hygiene, such as in dressing and bathing. The curriculum places great emphasis on the theory that children in their early stages of socio-emotional development should be educated to love their parents and family in order that they can grow to love their school, community and the nation.
