Brunei Takes Big Step In Setting
Up Sports School
Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei is to set up
its own sports school this year.
Its formation is aimed at producing
more high quality and skilled athletes who are able to compete with
international athletes.
The selection of the school's first
intake began yesterday with a medical and physical fitness test.
Some 186 secondary students aged 11 -
13 years attended the test, which is the main requirement before
joining the school.
The students undergo a medical check
up before taking part in eight types of physical fitness tests
including a 1600 meters run and sits-ups.
The sports school expected to start
in June this year will focus on Golf, Sepak Takraw, Athletics and
Football.
Apart from focusing on sport, the
students will continue with their academic studies.
The formation of the sport school is
the country's long-term preparation to identify potential students
excelling in both sports and academics. Many parents said they support
their children to enter the sports school.
They welcomed the efforts made by His
Majesty's government to form such a school. One parent when
interviewed hoped her child would have a career in future in sports.
Meanwhile, some parents hoped the
school would provide an opportunity to the children to prove their
capabilities.
On Sunday the students who registered
for the physical test will undergo a sport selection session.
The test is to identify the right
sport for them. --
