Get Ready, Wushu is Here At Last

Bandar Seri Begawan - The main objective of establishing the Wushu Federation of Brunei is to promote Wushu martial arts to produce outstanding Wushu athletes who will represent the country at both regional and international arenas, an official said yesterday.

Originating from China, Wushu is an acronym for a type of Chinese martial arts. It is a very old form of traditional sports that promotes overall health.

Formed on the 29th of March this year, the Wushu Federation of Brunei currently has more than 100 members.

The federation hopes that the martial arts will be accepted by all and within a short time produce some Wushu athletes who will represent Brunei to the 22nd SEA Games in Vietnam later this year.

Wushu classes are held in Youth Centre in the capital under the guidance of Wushu coach from China, Chen Nian En.

Three classes are available for Wushu enthusiasts, for beginners, adults and children. Being a Wushu expert, Mr. Chen hopes to produce potential champion Wushu athletes.

Awang Fatih, a Wushu enthusiast, said he decided to join Wushu because the martial arts foster both physical well being and self-defence skills.

In Brunei, Wushu is a relatively new form of martial arts, even though it has long existed in Asia and has been accepted as one of the events in the Asian games held in Beijing in 1990 and the SEA Games in Manila in 1991.

Mr Calvin who learned Wushu since last year, said a major part of Wushu is the 'slow movement' which focused on internal energy.

The first phase of Wushu training involves increasing the upper body strength before moving to more advanced level involving weapons such as knife, and sword.  -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
