Brunei's First Open Heart Surgery Today

Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei will achieve another milestone in medical history when the first open heart surgery will be performed today.

The operation will be done by experts of the Gleneagles Jerudong Park Medical Centre.

The patient of the open heart surgery is Dayang Bungsu Binti Hashim who is now admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Gleneagles JPMC Cardiac Centre.

Dayang Bungsu yesterday received a visit from the Chief Executive Officer of Gleneagles JPMC, Pengiran Dato Haji Kamaruzzaman.

The surgery will begin at 1.30pm today.

Fifty-two year-old Dayang Bungsu hails from Kampong Perpindahan Lambak Kanan. She had a hole in her heart since she was born.

When asked about the surgery, she admitted that she was quite nervous but has full faith in the team of specialists who will be conducting the surgery.

Today's first open heart surgery brings Gleneagles JPMC one step closer to its vision of becoming a comprehensive cardiovascular centre of international recognition.

The surgery will be performed by a team of surgeons and nurses led by Chief Surgeon Dr. Rieda Menshawe El Oakley.

Dr. Rieda said the surgery will take between three to five hours.

During the open heart surgery the patient will be put under general anaesthesia and put on a ventilator. An incision is made in the chest, exposing the heart.
