Brunei's First Open Heart Surgery

Begawan - Brunei will achieve another milestone in medical
history when the first open heart surgery will be performed today.
The operation will be done by experts
of the Gleneagles Jerudong Park Medical Centre.
The patient of the open heart surgery
is Dayang Bungsu Binti Hashim who is now admitted to the Intensive
Care Unit of Gleneagles JPMC Cardiac Centre.
Dayang Bungsu yesterday received a
visit from the Chief Executive Officer of Gleneagles JPMC, Pengiran
Dato Haji Kamaruzzaman.
The surgery will begin at 1.30pm
today.
Fifty-two year-old Dayang Bungsu
hails from Kampong Perpindahan Lambak Kanan. She had a hole in her
heart since she was born.
When asked about the surgery, she
admitted that she was quite nervous but has full faith in the team of
specialists who will be conducting the surgery.
Today's first open heart surgery
brings Gleneagles JPMC one step closer to its vision of becoming a
comprehensive cardiovascular centre of international recognition.
The surgery will be performed by a
team of surgeons and nurses led by Chief Surgeon Dr. Rieda Menshawe El
Oakley.
Dr. Rieda said the surgery will take
between three to five hours.
During the open heart surgery the
patient will be put under general anaesthesia and put on a ventilator.
An incision is made in the chest, exposing the heart.
