Liquor
By Rol Ezam
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Justice finally caught up with a 41-year-old woman
who sold Customs contraband goods for "easy money", when she
was fined $1,500 or 3 months imprisonment in default by the
Magistrate's Court yesterday.
The green IC holder, Lau Lai Ching,
admitted to selling eight cans of Tiger beer. For this, she was
imposed a $500 fine or a month in jail by Magistrate Lailatul Zubaidah.
She was fined another $1,000 or two
months in custody for possessing a large cache of liquor in her house,
the Customs Prosecutor ASC Hj Jamil Hj Tuah said.
According to the Prosecutor, the
Customs Preventive Officers found her selling the said liquor to a car
driver. When the driver left her house, the officers questioned the
driver regarding the beer found inside the car.
The officers were acting on a public
tip-off, where they stationed themselves at the vicinity of Simpang
15, A 2 at a building in Jalan Gadong to arrest the accused.
The driver of the said car confessed
to buying the items from Lau at the price of $20.
The officers then raided the house
and seized several types of liquor, including two bottles of Andy
Player Special Whisky, three bottles of White Wine, 51 cans of Tiger
beer, 15 bottles of Guinness Stout and a bottle of Johnny Walker.
Investigations revealed that a
Limbang Chinese man known as 'uncle' supplied the liquor to Lau. She
also failed to produce any Customs Permit to the officers to show that
the cans and bottles of liquor were legally imported, the Prosecutor
added.
The value of the liquor found at her
house was estimated at $242 and the Customs Duty to be paid was $108.
All the items seized were forfeited
to the state. -- Courtesy
