Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei plans to form a national orchestra made up of young people.

A workshop to that effect was held in an effort to scout young talented musicians from throughout the country yesterday.

The Special Duties Officer at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dato Haji Matussin in his opening remarks said that music culture, the result of human creativity, plays an important role in life, and that as a cultural element, it can function as a nation developer.

He added that the music culture should be given priority and he lamented on the poor response to music by the community.

He noted that except for a few traditional musicians, there are no potential musicians who could take over in maintaining music for the future.

The formation of the orchestra is hoped will encourage youngsters to fill their spare time with beneficial activities.

The programme is also aimed at instilling awareness of contemporary music without forgetting the socio-cultural elements.

Some 15 government and non-government secondary schools attended the daylong workshop.

The course participants were entertained to an ensemble of 'Kampong Ayer' composed by the two facilitators of the workshop.
