A National Orchestra To Be Formed
To Save Culture

Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei plans to
form a national orchestra made up of young people.
A workshop to that effect was held in
an effort to scout young talented musicians from throughout the
country yesterday.
The Special Duties Officer at the
Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dato Haji Matussin in his
opening remarks said that music culture, the result of human
creativity, plays an important role in life, and that as a cultural
element, it can function as a nation developer.
He added that the music culture
should be given priority and he lamented on the poor response to music
by the community.
He noted that except for a few
traditional musicians, there are no potential musicians who could take
over in maintaining music for the future.
The formation of the orchestra is
hoped will encourage youngsters to fill their spare time with
beneficial activities.
The programme is also aimed at
instilling awareness of contemporary music without forgetting the
socio-cultural elements.
Some 15 government and non-government
secondary schools attended the daylong workshop.
The course participants were
entertained to an ensemble of 'Kampong Ayer' composed by the two
facilitators of the workshop.
