Labour officials attend Asean
meeting in Jakarta

Senior officials from the Labour
Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs are currently attending the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Labour Ministerial
Meeting (ALMM) in Jakarta, Indonesia. The senior officials' meeting
which commenced on Monday discussed cooperation in training, including
the monitoring of the labour market, workers' social insurance and
cooperation in industrial relations.
Besides officials from the ten Asean
countries, delegates from Asean's partner countries of China, South
Korea and Japan, as well as representatives of the International
Labour Organisation (ILO), also attended the meeting.
The meeting will wind up on May 7 to
give way to the ministerial meeting from May 8 - 9, which will be
officially opened by Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri.
The ministerial meeting is expected
to produce a joint communiqué on Asean's integration in labour
cooperation, development of skills, safety at work and health,
dialogue on social issues and cooperation with the ILO.
Asean also seeks to establish
cooperation with China on social insurance, with Japan on industrial
relations and with South Korea on manpower development.
