Those Who Sell Rusty, Expired
Canned Goods Beware
Kuala Belait -
Shops that sell rusty, out of date canned goods are to come under
watch. There have been complaints recently that some supermarkets and
shops have been guilty of passing off expired foodstuff.
Consumers are now advised to be aware
always of expiry dates on canned or packed food before buying or
consuming them.
Failure to do so might prove
hazardous to their health, the local health authorities have warned.
Any complaints could be lodged with the Health Department's food
safety unit.
The Kuala Belait Health Department's
food safety unit has advised the public not to purchase or consume
food in which the cans were rusty, flatulent, dented, leaked or the
dates of consumption had expired.
They were urged to be extra careful
when purchasing the goods and once opened, the content should be
quickly consumed or heated to ensure it is free from any kind of
contamination.
Health supervisor, Dayang Hajah
Norlaila said for the sake of consumers' own health, they must ensure
that the canned food they bought were safe to be taken.
If there were any complaints
pertaining to this matter, they could contact the food safety unit at
the health office.
The unit also provides instructions
on extending the shelf life of canned food. Food should be stored in a
clean and dry container at a room temperature of between 21 and 24
degrees Celsius. Any leftovers should be put in a container.
As part of its duties, the food
safety unit will continuously conduct routine spot checks on retail
shops, food outlets and others and as follow-up actions upon receiving
complaints from the public, food unit officials said. -- Courtesy
