Kuala Belait - As drug abuse among youths saw a marked increase in the oil district of Belait parents have been told to focus on their children.

Last year alone, the Belait District reported 146 arrests compared to 97 in the previous year.

The Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Dato Awang Haji Adanan said drug problem is on a rise and it should be countered both at national, regional and international levels.

But that was not an easy task and need much attention and hard work.

He said this at the official establishment ceremony of Gerakan Ibu Bapa Belia (GIBB) or Youth Parent Movement, for the housing resettlement of Kampong Pandan in Kuala Belait yesterday afternoon.

Dato Awang Haji Adanan said drug abuse was not only against the laws of the country that would bring negative effect on the abusers but also could threaten the security and peace of the nation.

He also said the proactive prevention measures should be given priority to hinder youth from being influenced and involved in the misuse of drugs.

He added parents play an important role in monitoring their children. They should give religious education and show a good example to their children so that they could attain good moral values.

Establishing a harmonious family unit is a good foundation to prevent the children from anti-social activities.

The formation of G.I.B.B in the Belait District is the fourth of its kind since 1994. The first was formed in the Brunei Muara District.

The objective was to focus the energy and ideas of parents and children through various activities and programmes in the social, economy, religious and sports sectors. A total of 32 people have registered as the G.I.B.B committee members. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
